Drawing Up A Game Plan For Your Life

Thursday Oct. 11, 2018

I'm a full time college student working 3 jobs and it can get pretty hectic. My mother used to say

"I'm so busy I don't have time to shit."

Over the years, I've developed a system trifecta to get your shit organized.

This blog post may or may not be more for myself than anything.

I'm the type of person that needs to get everything on paper,

or a giant whiteboard,

or else big topics can get lost in small details.

1. Categorize Your Mind

So let's get started with the big things in your life that need attention. Another way to do this is to work backwards. Write down all your concerns and things stuck at the back of your head.  Then categorize all of them into different groups. For me, those categories are:

  1.  God/my beliefs

  2. Family & friends

  3. Education

  4. Work/Finance

  5. Me (self care & doing things I care about)

Obviously, there are subcategories for categories. For example, family and friends, the people I want to put most of my energy towards are my best friends, my immediate family and my boyfriend.

2. Go through your week and decide how much you'll dedicate to each subcategory.

Tasks what you'd want to complete to fulfill that time towards those subcategories. You'll have to prioritize and really pick and choose what you think is more important. I like to think I'm Superwoman and I like to think that there are enough hours in the week to be able to do everything I want to do. I want to be able to give 150% to my school work but still get that promotion at work, and still hang out with these friends and go to that show with my boyfriend, drive my sister to her Cadets meeting. Trust me, unless you're not human, you will not be able to put 150% into everything you do if you're tired. I can stare at a screen all night and not do anything productive and then go to my lecture and absorb nada, and suffer at work as well. I once had my boss tell me to go pour waters for a table in front of other employees 5 times before anything registered. Terribly embarrassing. Also, trying to take on too much WILL LEAD TO A MENTAL BREAKDOWN. Or, we call it burning out.

3. Now, it's time to organize your place these priorities into your schedule.

Personally, I find the best way to keep track of all this is the TRIFECTA of all organization, and being where you need to go at the right time.

A. GOOGLE CALENDAR

I don't have time to decorate a physical agenda calendar all pretty. If that's you though, by all means. But, Google Calendar is quick, has all the information you need, you can even input locations, share with your friends or classmates, and there even is a task list section where you can classify your task lists. Trust me, the best thing ever.

B. TO DO LIST

Categorize your to do list. Use your categories from step 1. Then you'll be sure to know you're touching each section of your life that is important to you. And sometimes you just need to have a "keep in the back of my mind" section of your to do list.

C. A NOTEBOOK / WHITEBOARD

Use to organize your thoughts, use to organize budgets, use to
